Below are synopses and links to the films created in the Documentary Video Workshop during the 2009 festival. The city of Bethlehem provides the backdrop for these unique films about our community and our citizens.

The Loop
Creator: Terry Harnett and John Jirik
Annotation: Provides commentary from members of the Bethlehem, Pa. community about the ""Loop,"" a bus service operated by the Lehigh and Northampton Transportation Authority. The service was initiated with the opening of the Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem to provide transportation between the casino and the downtown areas of Bethlehem. Participants provide their views about why the service was created, who it was created for, and whether it is achieving its objectives. People in the video include Rev. Dr. Douglas W. Caldwell, Senior Pastor, Central Moravian Church; Dana Devito, General Manager, Moravian Book Shop; Darlene Heller, Director, Bethlehem Planning Bureau; Kathy Vossough Deputy Director of Economic Development, City of Bethlehem; Silagh White, Director, ArtsLehigh; Phil Hess, Bus Driver, Lehigh and Northampton Transportation Authority; and Dan Azar, Owner, Hard Bean Cafe. LEPOCO

Annotation: Provides commentary from members of the Lehigh-Pocono Community of Concern (LEPOCO), a peace and justice organization founded in 1965. Members discuss their thoughts and experiences relative to their participation in the organization and its activities, including peace vigils and non-violent resistance. LEPOCO members in the video include Nancy Tate, Robert Daniels II, Fran Dreisbach, and Addison Bross. This short documentary was produced during the 2009 four-day Lehigh University/SouthSide Film Festival workshop.

The South Bethlehem Greenway : From rail to park
Creator: Jason Grear and Joel Atkinson
Annotation: Provides commentary from Darlene Heller, Director, Bethlehem Planning Bureau, and local business owner Andy Po, owner of Homebase Skate Shop, on the development and potential uses of the South Bethlehem Greenway. Rail service along the land now occupied by the greenway came to a halt early in the 21st century and the city of Bethlehem, Pa. subsequently purchased approximately 2.5 miles of the former rail bed from Norfolk Southern Corporation. The greenway is anticipated to provide additional recreational, transportation, and educational opportunities to the citizens of Bethlehem. This short documentary was produced during the 2009 four-day Lehigh University/SouthSide Film Festival workshop.

Off the Streets and into the Ring in Bethlehem, Pa.

Annotation: Offers viewpoints from Sis Obed Torres Cordero, Executive Director of Spanish Speaking Organizations; Alec Morales, founder of the Bethlehem Boxing Club; Ronald Cruz, a professional boxer; and Ruben Gonzalez, a boxer at the club, on the value of boxing in creating character and discipline among young men living in difficult socio-economic conditions. This short documentary was produced during the 2009 four-day Lehigh University/SouthSide Film Festival workshop.

The Need for Sustainability

Annotation: Provides commentary by Alliance for Sustainable Communities - Lehigh Valley members Jorris Rosse, Peter Crownfield, and Jason Slip, on the objectives, accomplishments, and activities of the organization. The group brings together individuals, organizations, small businesses, and farmers in the Greater Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania to develop approaches to sustain and improve the quality of life in the area through education, community outreach, partnership-building, and advocacy.
